Residence Life


The Resident Director is a professional staff position that serves as a 10 month live-in, primary manager for multiple on-campus residence halls in support of the college’s academic mission. The RD provides support, programming, information, and referrals to the Reed student community. The RD is responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating up to 15 House Advisers; maintaining a high visibility presence in the residence halls and across campus, including regular office hours; and assisting and supervising student staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of residence hall educational and social programs. They also advise students on matters related to Residence Life, which includes mediating conflicts and making referrals to appropriate campus resources for specialized assistance; and follow-up on resident concerns.

RDs at Reed are encouraged to use creativity, critical thinking, good judgment, professionalism, and a commitment to student development in order to support relationships and activities in a community governed by Reed’s Honor Principle. The institution places a strong emphasis on relationship building and conversations, rather than disciplinary action. Residence Life’s l approach is based in harm reduction, motivational interviewing, student autonomy, and restorative practices.

This is a 10-month live-in full time exempt position with an annual salary of $32,260 paid over 12 months. Beginning July 1, 2018, the salary will increase to $35,260 with final salary increase on July 1, 2019. This includes a fully furnished apartment, housing for the entire year, washer/dryer, and a meal plan. Partners and a pet are welcome. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Student staff supervision: hire, train, and evaluate up to 15 House Advisers
  • Manage a community of approximately 250-300 students. Be available, approachable and responsive to students.
  • Provide and/or facilitate educational opportunities that enhance student learning and growth in areas including academic and personal success, honor, community, diversity and inclusion, and wellness
  • Case manage students in respective areas group, which includes conducting meetings with residents as follow-up to violations of the Alcohol and Other Drug Policy and other disruptive and/or harmful behaviors; Advise and refer individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs, Residence Life procedures, and College policies
  • Crisis Management: serve in an after hours on-call capacity and triage students of concern in collaboration with on-call team
  • Housing Operations: manage ongoing facility maintenance, complete room inventories, assist with opening and closing, support main office operations
  • Departmental Initiatives: participate in the overall planning and management of the residence hall system and provide input in the development of policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Two years of full-time professional experience post baccalaureate degree preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to multicultural competencies
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS

Campus apartment is within a residence hall and the RD is visible to students during their non-scheduled hours. This position is exempt and work schedules are influenced by student, staff, and community needs. Work outside of traditional hours may include consultative assistance to staff, students, attendance at special events and functions, staff training and development participation, and on-call responsibilities.
