Reed College seeks an innovative, forward-thinking, and service-oriented archivist to work in Special Collections and Archives in the Eric V. Hauser Memorial Library at Reed College. Special Collections and Archives is a lively, fun, and informal space that helps undergraduates, researchers, and visitors understand and appreciate Reed’s unique history and culture. To this end, the Archivist will, under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives, acquire, preserve and make accessible the historical and cultural records of the college. The Archivist will work closely with Reed students, faculty and staff to organize and process archival materials using standard archival procedures, and creates accession records and finding aids for new and existing collections.

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives. The starting salary for this position is $60,000 to $62,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Organize and process new materials according to archival standards (DACS, RDA).
  • Create finding aids and accession records for materials in the archival database (ArchivesSpace).
  • Provide assistance to Reed students, faculty, staff, and the public and facilitate the use of archives, rare books, and other special collections.
  • Manage the acquisition, organization, preservation, and access of manuscripts and archives that support the historical and cultural record of the college and enrich the study of the liberal arts and sciences.
  • Work with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and potential donors to identify collection needs, coordinate gifts, and acquire additions to collections.
  • Survey campus departments and solicit a wide variety of administrative files and born-digital records for transfer to the archives; assist Reed departments in interpreting records retention schedules and ensure the timely transfer of records to the archives; review and revise retention schedules as appropriate; prepare collection development policies and develop collection strategies for the college archives.
  • Plan for and provide digital infrastructure to accommodate the growth, usability, security, preservation, and access of archives materials.
  • Serve in the Reed Digital Collections group and coordinate copyright statements, scanning, and metadata creation for special collections and archives materials.
  • Assist in the direction and supervision of student employees.
  • Assist with class visits, public presentations and general outreach to promote awareness and use of special collections and archives materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in library science, archival science, history, information science, or information management, with coursework in archival studies.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in an archives and records management environment, preferably in an academic setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with archival management software such as ArchivesSpace, Archivists’ Toolkit, or Archon.
  • Experience in donor relations and stewardship.
  • Experience directing the work of student employees, delegating appropriate tasks and monitoring progress.
