Medical Services Director

Reed College is seeking a Medical Services Director to oversee the medical operations of our Health & Counseling Center (HCC). The HCC is an integrated center with a strong collaborative and multi-disciplinary clinical staff that includes: Nurses, Family/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Staff Counselors, Social Work/Case Manager, Licensed Psychologists, and Medical Doctors. The HCC strives to evaluate, maintain, and promote the general health of Reed students so that they may pursue their academic interests with clarity, confidence, and joy. All providers, both of physical and mental health care, work with an integrated approach to coordinate efforts for holistic care of the student. The center is heavily utilized and is a lively and energetic place to work.

The Medical Services Director provides direct supervision of all licensed independent practitioners, nurses and support staff within Medical Services. The Director, along with the staff physician, will serve as consultant and advisor for mid-level providers and will collaborate closely with the leaders of the Administrative and Counseling teams to maintain integrative practices. The Medical Services Director is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socio economic status, other multicultural identities and students with diverse backgrounds. Successful candidates must be able to effectively engage with, and address health care needs in a manner that is respectful of, and sensitive to, all student identities, whether similar or different from your own.

This position is responsible for assessing and optimizing the quality of medical services in keeping with the overall mission and goals of the HCC including developing HCC policies and procedures, emergency response and outbreak planning and implementation of up-to-date medical guidelines and standards of practice. The Director implements successful recruitment, retention and onboarding strategies to ensure a highly qualified and diverse staff.

This is a full-time, exempt position working Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm. The salary for this position is $97,000. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package, including comprehensive medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution (after one year of service), 22 days of paid vacation, seven paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer, and many other campus amenities, such as membership to the campus fitness center for employee and spouse and discounted Trimet transit passes.

What You’ll Do

  • Establish administrative and clinical policies & procedures to ensure the provision of high-quality health care to a diverse student population.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for medical services; manage day-to-day communication and staffing, and problem-solve with student patients and providers.
  • Coordinates with the contracted labs and electronic medical records vendors and troubleshoots problems which are often heavily technical in nature.
  • Establish annual departmental goals, allocate staff and financial resources, communicate with key stakeholders across the College, and support the broader student experience mission of Student Services.
  • Provide supervisory oversight and engage in staff performance management.
  • Organizes the yearly influenza vaccination program for the entire campus and ensures that HCC staff themselves maintain up-to-date compliance in vaccination, N-95 mask fittings, and MMR vaccination.
  • Monitor state immunization requirements and insure compliance of entering students.
  • Assists with staff training in regards to  complete medical record documentation.
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor and evaluate the clinical staff to ensure quality of care standards are met.
  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of medical services in a student-centered facility.
  • Vocalize and prioritize a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and integrate elements of this commitment into employee performance reviews and professional development plans.


Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or related. Current unencumbered Oregon license as a Registered Nurse or Clinical Specialist and seven years post-licensure in direct patient care, with progressive leadership responsibilities including three years of management and supervisory experience. Current Adult CPR certification or the ability to obtain within the first three months. Experience in primary care with adolescent and young adult patients is desired. Experience working with an electronic health record (EHR) system.
