Social Sciences Librarian


Reed College seeks an innovative, forward-thinking, and service-oriented librarian to provide expertise in research methods, resources, and instruction for anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, and related interdisciplinary programs. In this position, you will support and collaborate with students and faculty engaged in research, inquiry, and coursework throughout the curriculum, culminating in a senior thesis required of all students for the Reed community.

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position reporting to the Director of Research Services. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10 percent employer contribution (after one year), educational assistance for employees and their children, 22 days paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer and many other campus amenities, such as membership to the campus fitness center for employee and spouse. The library supports professional development and provides reimbursement for some relocation expenses. The starting salary for this position is $62,000-$64,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

  • You are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about key issues and trends in instruction, collection development, research, and reference in the social sciences.
  • You have experience or an academic degree in a social sciences discipline (e.g., anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, and related interdisciplinary programs).
  • You enjoy supporting research with quantitative and qualitative social sciences data.
  • You are adept at navigating legal resources and government information.
  • You have experience locating and acquiring datasets such as Census data, ICPSR, or IPUMS.
  • You have experience in teaching using instructional design, lesson planning, and assessment practices.
  • You are committed to user-centered library services and excited to work with an active community of undergraduate scholars.
  • You advocate for diversity with a commitment to fostering an accessible, equitable, and inclusive educational environment and workplace.
  • You cultivate productive relationships and enjoy working in a collaborative environment.
  • Serve as primary liaison to assigned subject areas and actively develop collaborative relationships with faculty and students in those departments and programs.
  • Develop and deliver reference and instruction services; teach research tools and skills relevant to social sciences disciplines.
  • Provide in-depth, specialized research consultations in support of the entire research lifecycle, including senior thesis.
  • Develop and manage electronic and print collections to support the research and teaching needs of the community.
  • Engage with a dynamic community using both traditional research methods and emerging modes of scholarship and pedagogies.
  • Collaboratively develop and participate in library outreach and engagement programs.
  • Develop and maintain subject-based online research guides.
  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or relevant advanced degree and minimum of 1 year of professional library experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience in teaching using instructional design, lesson planning, and assessment practices.
  • Knowledge of technology and tools for research and teaching, including citation management.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, writing, and analytical skills.
