Weekend Community Safety Dispatcher/Officer

Community Safety

Reed College is seeking to hire a weekend community safet dispatcher/officer. This position is scheduled to work two 12 hour shifts per week, on Saturday and Sunday. Pay for this position is $19.58/hour and this position is eligible for the Reed College employee benefits package. Being a Community Safety Officer (CSO) is important and exciting work in higher education. Each day, you will conduct patrols and talk to students, staff, and faculty across campus. It will be your duty to get to know the people and places in our community, in order to help us stay safe.

Prior experience with security work is not required because we provide two months of field training for all new hires. During this time, you will learn how to patrol and how to be a first responder when someone needs assistance. To be successful as a CSO, you don’t have to have a specific background or experience, but you do need to be friendly, and the kind of person who can learn to react calmly in an urgent situation.

  • Complete a new hire training program for the first several months of employment. Earn your DPSST certification.
  • Conduct patrols. Survey the campus for safety and security hazards.
  • Engage in conversation with students and other members of the campus community. Get to know members of our community before there is an incident.
  • Be a first responder. Respond to calls for medical assistance or assistance with other urgent situations.
  • Write reports about incidents.
  • Occasionally serve as Dispatcher. Prioritize calls for assistance, send officers on assignments, and take calls on the main college switchboard.


  • Must have a driver license and be comfortable driving a vehicle in emergency situations.
  • Must pass a physical capabilities test after receiving a job offer.
  • Must be able to work on your feet for most of the day and to walk, climb stairs, carry a heavy medical bag, and lift heavy equipment occasionally.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to be DPSST certified.
