Reed College is hiring for a Post-Doctoral Research in the Schaack Lab in the Department of Biology. Our lab conducts research on topics related to mutation biology using the model system, Daphnia. Our main approach is to use experimental evolution and whole genome sequencing to better understand the evolution of mutation rates (base substitutions, insertions, deletions, transposable element mobilization, and other mutation types) and the genome. The position is initially for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal.

Starting salary for this position starts between $61,008 and $64,356 annualized. This is an exempt position paid in accordance with the current NIH Postdoctoral pay structure.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee a set of previously proposed experiments as part of an NSF-funded proposal
  • Develope independent projects
  • Collaborate on: experimental design and logistics, training students on lab techniques and animal rearing (Daphnia) and algae culturing, operating specialized equipment (microscopes, thermocyclers, qPCR machines, etc), performing specialized molecular biology techniques, preparing samples and doing library preparation for whole genome sequencing, conducting data analyses using whole genome/transcriptome data, qPCR data, and phenotypic data, and writing/editing manuscripts
  • Mentor undergraduate projects

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or related field
  • Prior experience with invertebrate model organisms, experiments in the area of mutation biology, whole genome sequencing techniques and analyses, and teaching/mentorship experience are required.
